Upholstery/ Reupholstery

Furniture is much more than just inanimate objects in our homes. Everyone has a piece of furniture that they are emotionally attached to and can’t let go. Or if you are an artsy person, furniture can be a medium for self-expression. But most modern furniture lasts barely more than 15 years, and it can be a headache to find a replacement that is perfect for your taste.

At BM Upholstery, our mission is to give your beloved furniture a second life. Having experiences in both traditional and modern upholstery, we provide a range of services depending on your needs.

If you have a valuable antique, traditional upholstery will be the best option as it won’t decrease the value of your furniture. Produced with labour-intensive techniques and natural materials (e.g. animal hairs), traditionally upholstered furniture can last for generations - they are also more supportive to your back and better for your health. Modern upholstery is a more economical option and will be best-suitable for contemporary furniture. The turnaround is quicker, and you can have more flexible designs. We offer a vast array of sample materials for you to choose from at our workshop.

Sofas, chairs, window seats, footstools… we upholster any furniture you want as long as it has a solid frame for us to attach soft coverings. We can re-upholster your old furniture so it looks identical to the original design, or if you come up with any new idea, let’s discuss it and we will create a unique piece just for you!

Spring Replacment

Soft and bouncy, sofa seats are kids’ favourite playgrounds - but it also means they are susceptible to damages. Though most modern sofas are made with steel springs, they still get weakened with time, and you may hear an unpleasant crunching sound as you press the seat.

Webbings can also lose elasticity or snap if your sofa is well-used - you may feel it sinks to much when you sit on it. If snapped webbings are left unattended, they can cause further damages to the interior foam and premature wear to the upholstery.

Using specialised techniques, we can help you to replace springs and webbings easily. Send us a photo of the damaged area of your furniture today with any relevant information, and we will offer you a FREE estimate ASAP!

Stitching/ Restitching

Burst seams can be a risk to your furniture. If left unrepaired, further bursting may happen, and the lifespan of your sofa will be shortened significantly. But don’t worry - as upholstery experts, we are here to help.

For minor damages, we will repair them by hand stitching so we can complete the job at any place that is convenient for you. By using a curved upholstery needle, we will use all the previous stitching holes and ensure that the stitches are on the inside of the cover. If larger repairs are needed, we will take off the cover of your seat and bring it to our workshop for machine stitching.

And of course, we can also do bespoke decorative stitching - send us the patterns you like and we will stitch them into your upholstery cover.

Bespoke

Are you a picky buyer who can’t find any design you like in a furniture store? If so, this flexible service will be perfect for you!

We make bespoke cushions, loose covers (so you can refresh the look of your sofa without buying a new one), and headboards. We can take inspiration from anywhere, for example a photo or a sketch. If you need suggestions with materials, we have a variety of sample fabrics and fillings for you to choose from. For the bespoke headboard service, we also offer wood panels and we will cut them to any shape you want.

And of course, feel free to contact us if there’s anything else you want, and we will see what we can do!

Cushioning

Cushions are the source of comfort. Nothing feels better than sinking into your sofa after a stressful day of work.

But furniture is not made to last forever, and it is normal for cushions to get saggy overtime. Thinking about buying a new sofa? Save the money and the time! We can simply replace the cushion for you at a lower price.

Feathers, foams, fibres… we offer a variety of filling materials with different firmness levels. Welcome to our workshop to try foam samples and find out what you like the most. As experts in cushion making, we will cut the foam to match your optimum comfort level. For an extra soft feel when sitting on, we would also recommend a Dacron wrap with stockinette which gives a rounder look to your cushion.

Fireproofing

Safety should always be the priority in every household. But in the UK, it is only a recent requirement to fireproof upholstered products. Many old furnitures produced before the 1990s are not made of flame-retardant materials. They can catch fire easily and set nearby combustible objects ablaze very quickly.

Luckily, this won’t be a problem if your furniture is fireproofed, which would stop burning within 5 min after ignition.

At BM Upholstery, we provide a professional back-coating service by putting a layer of fire retardant fabric underneath the cover. This is the most permanent way for fireproofing and won’t alter the look of your beloved furniture. We choose 100% wool as our inter-liner - it is a naturally fire-retardant material and complies with British Standards BS 5852 ignition source 5.
